Spring/Fall or at Night (Mild Weather)

Energy Savings Calculations  -  not including freezing water at  night.

The Window R/F can save electricity in mild weather (spring, autumn or at night).  Without air conditioner, outdoors is usually colder than indoors.  The kitchen, because of the oven and the indoor refrigerator is usually the warmest place in a home.  When air conditioner is On, there is no net energy savings (see bottom for illustration).  Besides many homes don't have A/C or the A/C is not used to cool the kitchen.

For example, in NYC the window R/F can save approximately 40%,  in Reno 47%, in Miami 1%, in and in Anchorage 71% over a similar indoor R/F (to download the MS. Excel Spreadsheet for these HTML files, change the file extension from *.htm to *.xls in your browser)

The Indoor R/F must transfer heat from its inside (at 42 °F) to its outside (at 72 °F).

This temperature gap is:  72 - 42 = 30 °F

The Window R/F must transfer heat from its inside (at 42 °F) to its outside (at 52 °F)

This temperature gap is:  52 - 42 = 10 °F

The workload on the Window R/F is much less (1/3), resulting in energy savings, higher efficiency (COP) and prolonging the R/F's life.  In addition, since a part of the Window R/F is outdoors, it (the insulated box) gains heat more slowly resulting in additional energy savings.
